ams Osram Launches Next-Gen OSTAR Projection Power LEDs for Brighter Projectors and Automotive HUDs

2025-08-13 10:38:47 417

Shanghai, China, August 12, 2025 – ams-Osram (SIX: AMS), a leading global supplier of intelligent sensing and emitter solutions, today announced that its next-generation OSTARTM Projection Power LEDs are setting the standard for LED technology innovation for compact projection systems and even future head-up displays (HUDs). ams-Osram plans to test these products using the US automotive qualification standard AEC-Q102. Once completed, these LEDs will also be used in automotive projection systems. These LEDs not only offer a compact design but also precisely match the etendue of DMD (digital micromirror device) imagers, boosting projector brightness by 10-15%.

OSTARTM Projection Power LEDs stand out for their precise etendue matching, enabling optimal light coupling into DMD systems, ensuring maximum efficiency and brightness for projection.

One LED, Two Applications: Projection and Automotive
Projector manufacturers are currently challenged to develop brighter, smaller, and more efficient devices. The new OSTARTM Projection Power LED from ams and OSRAM meets these demands with its exceptional performance: it delivers up to 880 lumens of brightness in a compact 6.8mm x 7.6mm package, making it an ideal choice for mini and pico projectors. Optimized etendue matching for 0.3-inch, 0.4-inch, and 0.6-inch DMD systems maximizes light output. Automakers also benefit from this: the LED's excellent brightness and color fidelity deliver sharp, high-contrast images for head-up displays, even in bright sunlight. Its compact design allows for seamless integration into space-constrained vehicle cabins.

Vicknes Ratha Krishnan, Product Manager at ams and OSRAM, emphasized: "The new OSTARTM LED offers exceptional performance and a long lifetime, contributing to sustainability, an increasingly important factor for our customers. This significantly reduces maintenance and operating expenses throughout the product's lifecycle."

Technical Solutions for the Highest Demands
The OSTARTM Projection Power LED stands out due to its precise etendue matching, which enables optimal light coupling into the DMD system, ensuring maximum projection efficiency and brightness. This product's compact design and high power density (up to 6.6A/mm² for blue and green versions) enable use in space-saving applications without compromising light output. Supporting a four-channel system (amber, transition green, blue, and deep blue), these LEDs offer not only outstanding color rendering but also high design flexibility. Innovative chip technology with an isolation structure enables extremely high current density and ensures stable performance even under extreme conditions. The series chip connection and low forward voltage design significantly simplify integration into existing systems. This reduces the complexity of driver electronics and helps lower overall costs. Furthermore, the use of a copper metal circuit board improves thermal management and is compatible with surface-mount packaging, simplifying assembly. Compared to traditional light sources, these LEDs offer superior lifetime and reliability, making them particularly suitable for long-term operation applications such as industrial projection and automotive applications.
