PN Junction Diodes as Electronic Switches: Charge Storage Effect & Reverse Recovery Time Impact

PN junction diodes are often used to make electrical switches. In the forward-biased state, i.e., the on state, a small applied voltage can produce a large current; in the reverse-biased state, i.e., the off state, only a small current exists within the PN junction. The switch circuit parameter we are interested in is the switching speed of the circuit. The following content will qualitatively discuss the switching transient of the diode and the charge storage effect. Without any mathematical derivation, we....

Using the 4200A-SCS Parameter Analyzer to Study the Electrical Properties of Photovoltaic Materials and Solar Cells

As the demand for clean energy grows, the potential of solar energy is increasingly gaining attention. Solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity by absorbing photons and releasing electrons. Electrical testing is widely used in research and development and production to characterize their performance, including DC/pulse voltage measurements, AC voltage testing, etc., analyzing key parameters such as output current, conversion efficiency, and maximum power output, often under different light int....

IGBT vs MOSFET: Key Differences, Operating Principles, and Applications in Power Electronics

MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) and IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) are two important power switching devices in the field of power electronics. They exhibit significant differences in terms of structure, operating principles, performance characteristics, and application scenarios. The following is a detailed comparison of MOSFETs and IGBTs. IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) and MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) are two common types....

How to Accurately Measure Power Supply Ripple Noise: Probe Selection, Grounding, and Bandwidth Tips

A user was testing the ripple of a 5V signal output from a switching power supply using an oscilloscope with a 500MHz bandwidth. They found that the peak-to-peak value of the ripple and noise reached over 900mV (as shown in the figure below), while the switching power supply's specified peak-to-peak ripple value was

Why did HMC lose out to HBM?

Both HMC (Hybrid Memory Cube) and HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) were developed with the goal of replacing DDRx. They share similar names, structures, and both utilize 3D TSV technology, with performance levels surpassing that of DDRx by several times during the same period.Driven by the AI boom, HBM has reached its peak, while HMC has quietly faded into the background. What factors led to such a significant disparity? This article will analyze the underlying reasons. HMCHMC (Hybrid Memory Cube) was once haile....

What is a pulse signal and how is it generated?

I. Definition and Basic Characteristics of Pulses 1. What is a pulse? A pulse (Pulse) typically refers to a brief, pulsating electrical impulse (voltage or current) commonly used in electronic technology, resembling a heartbeat. Its main characteristics include waveform, amplitude, width, and repetition frequency. A pulse is a signal that occurs for a short duration within the entire signal cycle, with most of the cycle being signal-free, much like a human pulse. Pulses are used for synchronization, trigger....

What are some advanced applications of MCUs?

It is often said that MCUs themselves are not particularly advanced. During MCU development, certain standardized procedures must be followed, such as defining variables and functions, determining their lifecycle, scope of use, and access conditions; commonly used communication protocols should be abstracted, with fixed input/output specifications to facilitate product portability. However, in practice, there are often multiple implementation options for the same requirement, but there is always an optimal s....

How to Successfully Design a Power Module?

Power modules are power supplies that can be mounted directly onto a printed circuit board (see Figure 1) and feature power supplies for application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), digital signal processors (DSPs), microprocessors, memories, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and other digital or analog loads. Generally, these modules are referred to as point-of-load (POL) power supply systems or point-of-use power supply systems (PUPS). Because of the many advantages of modular construction, a w....

Balancing Resistors in Op-Amp Circuits

Balancing resistors have the following main roles in electronic circuits: to make the line symmetrical: balancing resistors can make the input side of the circuit symmetrical, thus reducing the error caused by asymmetry. Offset the input leakage current: balancing resistors help to offset the input leakage current, reducing the error caused by leakage current. Improvement of output state reliability: The use of balancing resistors improves the reliability of the output and reduces state instability due to u....

Power Inductors and Choke Inductors What are their main differences?

Power inductors and common-mode chokes differ significantly in their definition, function, and use. Common mode chokes, also known as common mode inductors, are mainly used to filter out common mode interference signals and protect sensitive components in circuits from external electromagnetic interference. It is through the use of inductors on the role of AC signal obstruction, the common mode interference signal is limited to a small range, commonly used in computer switching power supply and board design....
