Munich, Germany, November 7, 2024 - Infineon Technologies AG has recently launched SECORA™ Pay Green technology. Card designs based on this technology will produce the world's first fully recyclable contactless (dual-interface) payment card body made from environmentally friendly and locally sourced materials, laying the foundation for a significant reduction of plastic waste and CO2 emissions in the payment card industry.

The progress related to SECORA™ Pay Green will set the stage for an initial pilot program with card issuers. In addition, Infineon is working with leading payment card manufacturers and payment solution providers to prepare for mass production. The success of the first pilot projects will help drive the adoption of eco-friendly payment cards as the industry grows.
Infineon SECORA™ Pay Green pioneers a new generation of payment card technology. Traditional payment cards require individual copper wire antennas embedded in the card and use various material layers including inlay foils. These layers of material and the copper wire antenna covering the entire card make traditional contactless payment cards virtually impossible to recycle. In contrast, Infineon's new SECORA™ Pay Green solution sets a new standard for the recycling of dual-interface payment cards with its new environmentally friendly Coil-on-Module (eCoM) package, which includes a security controller and various software components, as well as an integrated contactless antenna. At the end of the card's life, the entire eCoM package can be removed from the card and disposed of as e-waste. The homogeneous card body can then be recycled as plastic, wood or paper, depending on the material. The integrated antenna also reduces costs and emissions associated with transportation and procurement. This new modular design reduces CO2 emissions associated with raw material procurement and logistics by more than 60%. By using the innovative eCoM eco-module, SECORA™ Pay Green's emissions are reduced to 27.10 kg CO2e* for the production of 1,000 cards, compared to 90.08 kg CO2e** for the production of 1,000 cards with a standard card system.

As a global semiconductor leader in power systems and IoT, Infineon is committed to decarbonization and digitization, and SECORA™ Pay Green not only sets a new standard for sustainable payment cards, but also lays the foundation for a greener payment industry in the future,” said Thomas Rosteck, President of Infineon Technologies' Secure and Connected Systems Business Unit. The SECORA™ Pay Green By reducing CO2 emissions and streamlining the recycling process, we help financial and card issuers to make a positive impact on the environment while meeting the growing customer demand for environmentally friendly solutions.”
Joe Pitcher, vice president of MasterCard's Sustainable Card Program, said, “Since 2018, MasterCard and industry partners have been working together to develop better, more sustainable payment card solutions. Current products have demonstrated that payment cards can be manufactured from renewable resources with increased recyclability. We support innovative products like Infineon's SECORA™ Pay Green, which demonstrate a willingness to reduce environmental impact through innovative thinking and product redesign. MasterCard encourages suppliers to pursue more ambitious reduction goals and innovate their product portfolios as Infineon has done.”
Toni Thompson, Executive Vice President of Credit and Debit Card Solutions at CPI, said, “This chip from Infineon is a game changer for the card industry. As a leading card manufacturer, CPI has a longstanding strategic relationship with Infineon and has already incorporated this new chip into a variety of card materials to help our customers become the first choice of cardholders. The SECORA™ Pay Green chip further pushes us in the direction of being more environmentally friendly while continuing to provide convenience and innovation to our customers.”
Mike Sabatini, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing at Perfect Plastic Printing, said, “One of Perfect Plastic Printing's missions is to find renewable and recyclable products for card manufacturing. With our longstanding partnership with Infineon, we have found these alternative materials for card manufacturing that have a lower environmental impact and lower carbon footprint. The launch of the new SECORA™ Pay Green solution will enable card manufacturers and banks to continue to issue innovative and secure cards and reduce their carbon footprint by double digits in the card manufacturing process.”
SECORA™ Pay Green is a plug-and-play solution that can be easily implemented in existing dual-interface card manufacturing facilities, further accelerating adoption. eCoM modules are also characterized by their ability to interact seamlessly with smartphone antennas. This brings a number of advantages to consumers, notably a high degree of convenience and ease-of-use in “pay-by-phone” scenarios. In addition, the solution can use a variety of sustainable card materials such as recycled PVC (rPVC), rPETG, PLA, marine plastics, wood and even paper.
Research shows that customers increasingly favor financial institutions that prioritize sustainable banking. In fact, the vast majority of consumers expect their bank to offer environmentally friendly payment cards. In addition, the number of laws and regulations related to environmental protection in the financial sector is growing. It is predicted that the number of payment cards made from recycled rPVC will increase to approximately 1.2 billion globally by 2028, a nearly five-fold increase from 226 million in 2022.
